EFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA: AN ASSESSMENT OF UNITED NATION SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS (UN-SDG) IN NORTH EASTERN NIGERIA

Abstract

Effective leadership is one of the major attributes of development in any given society. A society that does not properly utilize both human and material resources may not prosper. Development is a change from a stage of need to a fulfilled stage. Two terms are hitherto, interrelated. This and many more are the core indices that facilitate and sustain development. The study considers transformational leadership theory by (burns, M.J 1978) as the leadership approach that will bring changes in any given society. For the purpose of this study, the qualitative approach will be used in order to gather and analyze information with the aid of both primary and secondary sources of data. The target audiences of this study are the concerned Nigerians that are living in north-eastern part of Nigeria. The output of the study reveals that sustainable development will provide a brighter future for Nigerians; it will aid in utilizing our resources and facilitate economic growth. The major course of Nigeria’s underdevelopment is basically attributed to poor leadership and illiteracy. To achieve sustainable development there’s need to have a zealous and passionate leaders that are determined to bring development while the populace should embrace technological knowhow. People need to be liberated from illiteracy; equity in gender should also be put in place as a way of engendering economic prosperity.
