THE CHALLENGES OF CURBING BANDITRY IN KATSINA AND ZAMFARA STATES

Abstract

This study examined the challenges of curbing banditry in Katsina and Zamfara States in Dutsin-Ma, Musawa, and Faskari LGAs of Katsina State and Bungudu, Maradun and KauranNamoda LGAs in Zamfara State from 2015 to 2023. Employing the social structural conflict theory as it theoretical framework, the study explains the structural weaknesses facilitating it persistence. The finding revealed that underfunding, logistical constraints, mistrust between public and security agents, lack of sophisticated weapons, activities of undercover agents (informants), inaccessible terrain, among others were the major challenges undermining war on banditry, both in Katsina and Zamfara States. However, the study recommended strengthening community-based intelligent networks, enhancing inter-agency coordination and information sharing.
