AN ASSESSMENT OF SMART GOVERNMENT APPLICATION OF TECHNOLOGY IN NIGERIA CUSTOMS SERVICE: A STUDY OF ZONE A LAGOS

Abstract

The Nigeria Customs Service is facing the challenges of meeting up with global best practices thus, the study examined Technology application in Nigerian Customs service: A study of Zone A Lagos Command. The study used qualitative research, the target population of this study includes zone A customs, the total population is 6942, judgmental sampling was used, data was generated from both primary and secondary sources, in-depth- interviews were conducted with 10 stakeholders of Nigerian Customs Service, the data was analyzed thematic using Atlas TI9. The finding shows that the application of technology has increase transparency of Customs thereby minimizing corruption, boost revenue generation, proper examination of imported and exported goods. The finding also shows that Customs suffers from latest technology such as scanning machine, poor network connectivity and porous borders. The study recommends application of latest technology in order to ensure border patrol.
